After having one of my hard drives damaged beyond repair from a virus called "stoned" I was mad. But now I have been infected twice with the "monkey_b" on my brand new hard drive. So now I am justifiably out-raged. So what did I do? I tightened up security on my computer and I am going to show you how I did it to prevent you from succumbing to the same fate as I. In the year 2000 viruses will kill people because everything will run on a computer. Elevators will drop 40 stories to the ground killing up to 20 people at a time. Hospital computers will give incorrect data which may cause a person to get a drug that may be lethal to their bodies. Before I start I would like to tell you that if you plan to make a virus or a damaging TSR (Terminate and Stay Residence program) you better be willing to do hard time because new technology is allowing us to trace the exact location a virus came from. Also if you plan to spread a virus that is also illegal whether you know or not that you are doing it, it is intent because in the eyes of Canadian, law intent can include one or both of two things: 1) Recklessness 2) Neglect So if you damage anyone's computer in any way directly or not without their willingness you are lawfully responsible for it period.
Now here are my tips to prevent viruses:
1) Download the latest virus scanner for both your highest OS and your base OS.
ex. Windows 95 and MS-DOS 7
I suggest McAfee Virus Scan it comes with both Windows 95 and Dos and since they have a TSR (don't worry this one helps your computer) which scans things as you use them you usually do not have to unless you want to.
If you do not or cannot download or use this one chances are you will have to scan everything that goes in and/or out your computer.

2) Create an emergency disk so that when you do get a virus you can at least have a fighting chance at cleaning it. This can be done by:
a) formatting a 3.5 or 5.25 disk like this:
b) format a: /s/u (a: is the letter of the drive which you computer seeks on startup)
c) copy the files for your base OS virus scan off of your hard drive onto the diskette
e) now re-boot with the disk in the drive and see if it goes into dos.

3) Unless DOS is your only operating system never load a disk in DOS or DOS boxes because unless you have an anti-virus TSR for dos you risk infection.

*4) Go into your BIOS which is the program that starts up your computer (this should ideally be done by a professional because a mistake could mess up your computer.) and says something like: "press DEL to enter setup"
*Look in the menus to find something such as "BOOT SEQUENCE A,C" and change it to "C, A"
or
*Some computers may have something like "SEEK FOR FLOPPY TRUE". Change the value to false.
Why take this step?
By doing this you prevent contracting viruses because you accidentally turned on the computer with the disk in the drive and it loads up as a system disk.
Tip: In order to use your Emergency disk you will have to go back and reverse this. Always remember to reset it back after use.

*5) Go back into your bios and see if there is any option for virus protection. This will prevent things from writting or modifying your boot sector. Make sure that this optin is selected (on).

6) Use your caution when going on the Internet. Do not hit sites that are generally for a bad cause such as Warez or Pornography. Use a lot of discretion when downloading remember you never know who uploaded it and you never know who else downloaded it or did something to it.

7) Practise Safe Hex. By this I mean do not share writeable disks. Even with non-writeable disks such as a store bought CD-ROM you should still exercise some amount of caution *but for the most part it is generally safe.

8) Post messages on and around your computer reminding them about the dangers of unprotected hex.
